Senior AI / Control Intelligence Engineer
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Team: Control Intelligence & AI Systems
R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach.
As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.
R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
As a Senior AI / Control Intelligence Engineer, you will design and own the intelligence layer that governs how energy is stored, transmitted, and stabilized across superconducting systems.
Your work will sit at the intersection of control theory, time-series data, and machine learning, turning physical system behavior into predictive models and autonomous control strategies. You will collaborate closely with superconducting systems, embedded control, cloud platform, and safety teams to ensure AI decisions are explainable, reliable, and safe.
This is a senior role focused on system ownership, model strategy, and real-world impact, not experimentation in isolation.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and deploy AI models for prediction, anomaly detection, and control optimization
• Develop control intelligence for real-time energy systems using time-series data
• Translate physical system behavior into features, models, and decision logic
• Integrate AI outputs into real-time control pipelines and cloud platforms
• Evaluate tradeoffs between rule-based, model-based, and learning-based control approaches
• Ensure models are observable, explainable, and safe under failure conditions
• Support validation, simulation, and deployment of AI-driven control systems
• Mentor engineers and contribute to AI and control best practices
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related STEM field plus 7+ years of relevant experience, or MS/PhD with equivalent applied experience
• Strong background in machine learning applied to time-series or control systems
• Experience deploying ML models into production systems
• Familiarity with control theory, system dynamics, or optimization
• Strong programming skills (Python required; PyTorch/JAX preferred)
• Ability to collaborate across hardware, controls, and software teams
• Clear written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
• Experience with industrial AI, energy systems, or power infrastructure
• Background in reinforcement learning, MPC, or hybrid control systems
• Experience working with safety-critical or regulated environments
• Familiarity with simulation frameworks or digital twins
Export Compliance
This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.
Equal Opportunity
R-Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
Employment Type
Full-time
Compensation
Base salary range: $160,000 – $210,000 + equity
Salary will be based on several factors, including experience, expertise, and role level.
Comprehensive benefits package includes:
• Competitive compensation with equity
• Paid time off and company holidays
• Medical, dental, and vision coverage
• Paid parental leave
• 401(k) and retirement benefits
• Professional growth and learning opportunities
If you don’t meet 100% of the preferred qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
Building AI for physical infrastructure requires diverse experiences and disciplined thinking.
