Senior Embedded / Edge Control Engineer
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Team: Embedded & Edge Control Systems
R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach. As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.
R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
As a Senior Embedded / Edge Control Engineer, you will design and own the real-time control systems that operate superconducting wire and energy storage infrastructure at the edge.
Your work will sit between physical systems and cloud-based intelligence, ensuring that sensing, control, and safety logic execute reliably under strict real-time constraints. You will collaborate closely with superconducting systems, mechanical, electrical, AI, and cloud platform teams to ensure that high-level control decisions can be executed safely and deterministically in the field.
This is a hands-on, system-critical role where correctness, latency, and reliability matter more than abstractions.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and implement real-time embedded control software for superconducting wire systems and SMES energy storage
• Own edge-level control logic, including safety interlocks, state machines, and fail-safe behavior
• Define and maintain interfaces between sensors, actuators, and cloud-based control systems
• Ensure deterministic system behavior under normal operation, transient events, and fault conditions
• Collaborate with superconducting systems engineers to translate physical constraints into enforceable control limits
• Lead design reviews for embedded and edge control subsystems
• Support system integration, validation, and on-site deployment
• Mentor engineers and contribute to best practices for safety-critical embedded development
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field plus 7+ years of relevant experience, or MS with equivalent applied experience
• Strong experience developing embedded or real-time control systems
• Proficiency in C/C++ (or Rust) for embedded systems
• Experience with RTOS, real-time scheduling, and latency-sensitive software
• Familiarity with industrial control concepts such as state machines, interlocks, and watchdogs
• Ability to reason about system behavior under fault and degraded conditions
• Strong communication skills and disciplined approach to documentation
Nice to Have
• Experience with energy systems, power electronics, or grid-connected infrastructure
• Familiarity with PLCs, FPGAs, or industrial field buses
• Exposure to cryogenic systems or safety-critical environments
• Experience integrating edge systems with cloud platforms
• Knowledge of industrial or safety standards (IEC, ISO, etc.)
Export Compliance
This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.
Equal Opportunity
R-Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
Employment Type
Full-time
Compensation
Base salary range: $150,000 – $190,000 + equity
Salary will be based on several factors, including experience, expertise, and role level.
Comprehensive benefits package includes:
• Competitive compensation with equity
• Paid time off and company holidays
• Medical, dental, and vision coverage
• Paid parental leave
• 401(k) and retirement benefits
• Professional growth and learning opportunities
If you don’t meet 100% of the preferred qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
Building safety-critical infrastructure requires diverse experiences and disciplined thinking.
